
Jazmine an Sullivan, born and raised from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam was a vocalist for the backup band of Philadelphia International Records. At the age of five Her father was appointed as City's Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. She and her family moved later into the building's historic structure. In 2005, she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in the class of majoring in vocal music. Sullivan played the contralto member of the children's choir and then just a few years later, she performed in the adult choir. Sullivan received little exposure to secular music. She recalls that she was in her 11th year when someone asked her to sing solos in church. However, she was not quite ready to go. "Then McDonald's offered a competition for children in major cities. In the end, I got the opportunity to perform What God Wills on Showtime Apollo. The crowd was supportive." Stevie Wonder sang her part during his 13th birthday celebration. Sullivan, at age 15, was first signed to Jive Records. The label initially signed Sullivan to Jive Records in the year 15. She recorded an entire album. However, this album didn't get released. Sullivan was then dropped from the record label. They maintained a friendship with Missy Elliott and produced many of the tracks for her debut project, which included the hit single "Backstabbers" which was produced by Timbaland and composed by Elliott.
